Professor Danielle Schmitt Named 2024 ACS Rising Star in Biological Chemistry

Professor Danielle Schmitt has been named a 2024 Rising Star by the American Chemical Society’s Biological, Medicinal, and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (Bio & Med Chem Au) journal. The annual award highlights emerging leaders in scientific research worldwide whose scientific contributions have a lasting impact on research in various fields of the natural sciences.

As a Rising Star, Schmitt was invited to contribute a manuscript to the 2024 Rising Stars virtual special issue of ACS Bio & Med Chem Au and is also featured in an accompanying editorial.

Schmitt’s article is titled “A Genetically Encoded Fluorescent Biosensor for Intracellular Measurement of Malonyl-CoA.”

Investments will create more than 12,000 new jobs: 1,000 at Roche and more than 11,000 in support of new US manufacturing capabilities
Roche already has a significant existing US presence with more than 25,000 employees, 15 R&D centres and 13 manufacturing sites
Basel, 22 April 2025 - Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) announced today that it will invest USD 50 billion into the United States of America in the next five years. These investments further strengthen Roche’s already significant US footprint with 13 manufacturing and 15 R&D sites across the Pharmaceutical and Diagnostics Divisions, and are expected to create more than 12,000 new jobs, including nearly 6,500 construction jobs, as well as 1,000 jobs at new and expanded facilities.

As part of this investment, Roche will increase its existing footprint of more than 25,000 employees in 24 sites across eight US states. The investment will include:

Expanded and upgraded US manufacturing and distribution capabilities for its innovative medicines and diagnostics portfolio in Kentucky, Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon and California
A state-of-the-art gene therapy manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania
A new 900,000 square foot manufacturing centre to support Roche’s expanding portfolio of next generation weight loss medicines (location to be announced)
A new manufacturing facility for continuous glucose monitoring in Indiana
A new R&D centre in Massachusetts, conducting cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) research and serving as hub for our new cardiovascular, renal and metabolism research and development efforts
Significant expansion and upgrading of our existing pharmaceuticals and diagnostics R&D centres in Arizona, Indiana and California

Pharmacy sealed for illegal sale of abortion pills

Officials of the Drugs Control Department on Wednesday sealed a pharmacy in K.K. Nagar in Tiruchi that was involved in the illegal sale of abortion pills.

Acting on a tip-off, Health officials of Tiruchi Corporation on Tuesday embarked on an undercover operation to crack down on the illegal of abortion pills. A woman health official posing as a customer reached out to the pharmacy to purchase abortion pills. The seller asked her to come the next day to get the pills. The abortion kit containing five pills was sold at ?2,000 to her.
Following this, a surprise inspection was conducted by Drugs Control officials at the pharmacy on Wednesday and strips of abortion pills were found. An inspection was also conducted at the pharmacy’s agency outlet nearby, where empty cartons of medicine were found, after which both the pharmacy and the agency were sealed.Strict action was ordered against the pharmacy for selling medicines without a doctor’s prescription, an official said.
